Global warming is now being described as the biggest threat facing the planet. But its not a new problem. It has always been a serious issue, ever since the pollution started. It will still be a major issue for years to come, regardless of whatever corrective action scheme is embarked upon now. But it serves the strategy to make global warming the hot topic of the day. (b) someone in government raises the issue in order to make it the talking point. (c) the mass media follow the lead and discuss the government's 'stance' on the 'issue' (d) an in-depth 'scientific report' is produced. This is fodder for the academics/intellectuals who won't be convinced by a few newspaper headlines. They need to be shown that someone has done some serious scientific research. Whether proper research has been done is largely immaterial - most of them won't actually read the report. Especially if it is 700 pages long, eg the Stern Report. ( Even scientists, nerds and professors can find better things to do with their time! ) (e) the government's choice of action ( taxation ) is hailed as the awful but necessary remedy, without comprehensive discussion of the viable alternatives. The underlying plot is to frighten the public with such a menace that they will be glad that the government is doing something, anything against it. This problem -> fear -> solution scam has been used so many times before its a wonder we still fall for it. Prior to foisting this huge con trick on the nation, there was a small-scale dry run to see how people would react. Richmond. ( So where could that be ? ) How about the veil that buries the records of how many indigenous people were killed off when the Europeans conquered the Red Indians to found America ? ( read 20 billion minimum ) Or the veil that hides the truth about the 400 years of enslavement and oppression of the African tribes by 'upstanding Christian citizens' . ( It was approved by the Pope of the time, who basically decreed that anything goes with regards to non-christians because they're heathen. ) Or the veil that hides the ways in which ad agencies subtly manipulate children into nagging parents for new toys. Along with a whole bundle of junk mail which goes straight into the bin. Here's the thing; How many trees are being chopped down to produce the paper that makes the flyers that are posted to every home, only to be instantly thrown away as junk mail and never even read ? It's a needless waste of good trees and an exercise in futility. Today I got flyers for Boots ( I never shop there ), Poundsaver's travel products ( ain't going on holiday anytime soon ), portable electric scooters ( ain't incapacitated yet, thank God ), Hillarys blinds ( don't need blinds ), Tesco bargains ( I rarely shop there ), Bryant Homes ( can't afford a new home ), Leeds Castle ( may possibly go there ) and Gala Bingo ( definitely not my sort of thing ). Why do shops do it ? To them its marketing. To me its annoying. These days the internet allows precise marketing to people who are actually interested in your product. Why do these stupid corporations persist with old methods that waste a lot of resources and produce for them a sales result of around 1 per cent. Isn't it time to say a 1 per cent return isn't good enough ? How can it be worth the effort ? If I had to do a task with a 1 per cent chance of a successful result I absolutely would not bother with it ! I think that its high time that environmental concerns take precedence over unfruitful marketing activities. Residents now have to have a licence in order to put their old car up for sale. If you put a 'For Sale' sign in the window of your car you can get it towed away. Apparently you need a licence for such "street trading". I can't believe the council actually employs people to patrol the streets and enforce this rule. This is their policy to make Medway streets nicer. Well, I got news for them! It ain't the car dealers that ruin the neighbourhood. The council ought to be spending money on resurfacing the roads and fixing the potholes that are everywhere. But typically, the council pursues activities that will bring it some revenue back. Like pursuing the wrong sort of dealers. Whatever next ? Going there from Rochester by train is a complete joke. The bloke at the station wanted me to travel to London Bridge and change there. That is going 30 miles west to reach a point 13 miles south of where I started. He offered an alternative route via Ramsgate, which is 100 miles east. The stupid idiot says to me "the trouble is Tunbridge Wells is notoriously hard to get to". No you blithering idiot, Tunbridge Wells is one of those places you have made notoriously hard to get to by not offering a decent train service. Worst of all, there is no train after 7pm and the show starts at eight. Looks like I'll be kipping on a park bench and coming back in the morning.
